Vancouver Whitecaps have produced a late first-half blitz to overcome New England Revolution 4-3, who were devastated by a 23rd-minute red card.
New England jumped out to an early lead at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium through goals from Juan Agudelo and Kelyn Rowe in the opening 20 minutes but let the home side back into the game when central defender Andrew Farrell dragged the Whitecaps' Kenny Miller down in the penalty box.
Farrell was shown a straight red card and Camilo Sanvezzo converted the penalty, sparking a comeback from Vancouver, which put them 4-2 up when Miller scored in the 68th minute.
Despite a thumping strike from New England's Dimitry Imbongo Boele, the Whitecaps held on for victory to edge closer to the play-off positions in the MLS' Western Conference.
The Revolution took the lead in the 10th minute on Saturday when Agudelo ran onto a long pass and slotted the ball in the bottom corner and 10 minutes later it was 2-0 when Rowe got on the end of a well-worked move to score.
New England were cruising but when Miller got goalside of Farrell and the 21-year-old defender clipped the Scottish striker from behind, there was only one option for the referee, who pulled out his red card and pointed to the spot.
After Sanvezzo's penalty, Miller equalised in the 39th minute, dinking the ball over an opponent before blasting it home, while Vancouver took the lead with two minutes remaining before half-time thanks to Jordan Harvey's volley from Russell Teibert's cross.
Miller's second goal of the match, a spectacular half-volley from the edge of the penalty area, sent the home crowd wild and put Vancouver in control and while Imbongo Boele produced a thumping strike in the 84th minute to ensure a nervous finish for the hosts, the Whitecaps held on for three points.
Vancouver moved up to seventh in the Western Conference with 19 points, just one behind Los Angeles Galaxy, who sit in the fifth play-off position, while New England missed the opportunity to take fifth spot in the Eastern Conference.
In the American capital, Toronto FC came from behind to defeat DC United 2-1, while Portland Timbers won 1-0 over FC Dallas extending their unbeaten streak to 15 games.
In other MLS results, Columbus Crew defeated Eastern Conference-leaders Montreal Impact 2-0 and San Jose Earthquakes triumphed 2-1 away to Colorado Rapids.
