Tottenham earned a late point against Wigan as a last-minute Emmerson Boyce own-goal handed them a 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium.
Boyce had earlier scored at the right end as he cancelled out Gareth Bale’s bizarre opener in an eventful first ten minutes, before Callum McManaman’s excellent strike looked to have given his side the points.
Jean Beausejour and James McCarthy came in for the hosts, while Andre Villas-Boas made three changes including Jermain Defoe replacing Emmanuel Adebayor in attack.
After a strong start, Bale gave Tottenham the lead in the ninth minute in farcical fashion. Maynor Figueroa and Joel Robles attempted to play out of their own area, but as Robles tried to return the pass to his defender, the Welshman charged the ball down and it flew high into the net from six yards.
The lead lasted barely a minute however, as Boyce rose highest to nod home a Shaun Maloney corner from the right beyond a helpless Hugo Lloris into the bottom left-hand corner.
After a whirlwind start, Figueroa had to be alert to thwart Defoe after the striker look poised to shoot, but injured himself making the block, with Ronnie Stam coming on in his place.
Spurs were dealt an injury blow of their own on the stroke of half-time as Mousa Dembele limped off with a hamstring injury and Lewis Holtby replaced him.
Wigan survived a real scare in the final moment of the half as Defoe and then Scott Parker were both denied by Robles diving bravely at their feet in a goalmouth scramble before Beausejour managed to hack the ball away to safety.
Early in the second half, Lloris had to scramble across his goal to tip away a mis-hit Stam cross that threatened to drop in at the far post but the reprieve did not last long as Wigan took the lead moments later.
McManaman received a pass from McCarthy before cutting inside on his left foot and unleashing a dipping, swerving shot which flew into the roof of the net past a helpless Lloris.
Shortly after the hour mark, both sides made changes as goalscorer McManaman was taken off to be replaced by Franco di Santo, while Benoit Assou-Ekotto took Kyle Naughton’s place at left-back.
Wigan looked moments away from a priceless win, but there was late drama as substitute Aaron Lennon’s low cross deflected in off the shin of Boyce to ensure the points were shared.
The draw keeps Wigan in the relegation zone, two points adrift of Aston Villa, while Spurs remain fifth, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
