Inter, Roma fined for racist abuse

serie a
Inter and Roma have been fined 50,000 euros each after fans chanted racist abuse during the final round of Serie A matches on Sunday.
The incidents are the latest in a catalogue of episodes to blight the Italian game and come just a week after Roma were fined the same amount for abusing Milan striker Mario Balotelli in the 0-0 draw at San Siro on May 12.

Inter, who were also warned over their future conduct, have now been fined for the third time in four months after their fans shouted abuse in their 5-2 loss against Udinese.

The San Siro club were previously punished for similar actions in a game with Chievo back in February, and directing inflammatory chants towards Balotelli during the derby game with Milan just two weeks later.

Roma's punishment is somewhat more severe, with the club having been instructed to keep the Curva Sud section of their stadium empty for one league game next season after fans in that area were heard singing racially-derogatory songs during their 2-1 win over Napoli.

The reputation of Fiorentina fans has also been tarnished after a group of supporters were reported as having levelled yet more abuse at Balotelli as the Milan team boarded a train in Florence following their 2-1 win Siena, which secured their place in the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Vincenzo Montella's side.

Balotelli's return to Italy has been a largely successful one on the pitch, and the former Manchester City man scored his 12th Serie A goal of the season equalise against Siena with a penalty before Philippe Mexes netted the winner.

However, the 22-year-old is a controversial figure among opposing fans, and said last week that he would walk off the field of play if he was subjected to racist chanting again.
