Newcastle assistant John Carver charged with misconduct by FA
The Magpies coach faces possible action following a halftime bust-up with Wigan players and staff in reaction to Callum McManaman's horror challenge on Massadio Mairdara.
Newcastle assistant manager and former Toronto FC coach John Carver has been charged by the Football Association with misconduct over his involvement in a halftime alternation during his side's Premier League fixture against Wigan on Sunday.
Carver was seen approaching Wigan player Callum McManaman at halftime following the forward’s horror challenge on Magpies defender Massadio Haidara, and had to be restrained by other staff and players.
Carver then turned on Wigan coach Graham Barrow, with the pair having a heated exchange before stewards and police had to step in as Carver pursued his opposite number down the tunnel. McManaman was not disciplined retroactively by the FA for his challenge.
Carver, who has until the afternoon against March 22 to respond to the FA charge, has previous incidents when it comes to bust-ups on the football field.
During his first spell at Newcastle as a coach in 2002, Carver was involved in a row with Arsenal winger Robert Pires after the Frenchman took offense to a tackle made on him during an FA Cup quarterfinal. Later that year Carver even fell out with one of his own players, ordering Newcastle midfielder Laurent Robert to salute fans who had traveled to see the team take on Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League.
