Campeonato Paulista wrap: William double saves Ponte Preta
Ponte Preta closed to within one point of leaders Sao Paulo following their 2-2 draw away to XV de Piracicaba, while Botago also won.
Guto Ferreira's men were unbeaten heading into Saturday's match and that continued courtesy of William's double. An Artur own goal on 27 minutes handed the hosts the lead but Ponte Preta equalised through William, 13 minutes before the break. The Brazilian striker handed his side the lead five minutes into the second half, however Marcelo Soares rescued a point for XV de Piracicaba with 20 minutes remaining. Ponte Preta are just one point off top spot, although leaders Sao Paulo have two games in hand. Botafogo bounced back from their loss at Ponte Preta mi

Matri worried about tired Juventus
Alessandro Matri admits Saturday's Serie A win over Inter has cost Juventus a lot of energy ahead of next week's Champions League match.
The reigning Italian champions recorded a 2-1 away win over the Nerazzurri to make amends for their home loss earlier this season, but victory did not come easy for Juve. In a spiteful Derby d'Italia at San Siro, Matri scored a controversial winning goal after Rodrigo Palacio had levelled things up following Fabio Quagliarella's opener for Juventus. And Matri said the match could prove costly ahead of their Champions League showdown against Bayern Munich - who went on to win 9-2 against Hamburg. "Today's game took a lot out of us and we need to recharge our batteries ahead o

Mourinho: Lopez could remain Madrid number one
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho says Iker Casillas could find it hard to displace Diego Lopez upon his comeback from injury.
The winter arrival, signed in response to Casillas' bone fracture in January, has surpassed expectations in the skipper's absence, putting in a series of assured performances for the club. And Mourinho's acknowledgement of Lopez's form has placed the Madrid captain's squad status in doubt. "We must be honest. The way Diego is playing, it will be very hard to get him out of the net," he said. "I cannot say for certain that he will be stay there till the end of the season, but he is playing very well. For now, it will be difficult for Casillas to be on the bench against Galatasaray, bu

Valverde wary of Atletico threat
Valencia head coach Ernesto Valverde says upcoming La Liga opponents Atletico Madrid amount to more than just star striker Radamel Falcao.
The sought-after Colombian has scored 21 goals in all competitions so far this season, helping Atletico to third place but Valverde cites the team's fighting spirit as their main strength. "Atletico Madrid is not only (Radamel) Falcao," he said. "Falcao can be a problem for us, but Atletico is more than that. They have the spirit that keeps them on the top. "They also have very good attacking players, like Falcao or (Diego) Costa, who is in very good form, but mainly, they have their spirit: They are always ready to attack and they put pressure on you from the first mi

Four-goal Pizarro rejoices in Bayern rout
Bayern Munich hero Claudio Pizarro admits it felt 'wonderful' to score four goals in their 9-2 dismantling of Hamburg on Saturday.
Bayern stormed to a five-goal lead at half-time with Pizarro grabbing a double, before further adding to his tally with another two goals in the second, as well as assisting Arjen Robben for a pair of strikes of his own. "The four goals felt wonderful," Pizarro told Sky Sport after the match. "We played well, and I was in good mood. "The team is well on course. We want to be champions, and as the results are showing, we now almost have earned ourselves the trophy. "We also can pick up another two (the DFB Pokal and Champions League) yet." Allegri salutes improving Balotelli
AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri praised the impact Mario Balotelli has made since his January arrival from Manchester City.
The striker was instrumental in Milan's 1-0 win at Chievo on Saturday that saw them consolidate third place on the table. Chievo keeper Christian Puggioni could only parry the 22-year-old's free-kick towards the onrushing Riccardo Montolivo for his goal, helping a rejuvenated Milan to register their fourth consecutive win in a quest for second place. And Balotelli's ability at dead-ball situations, combined with his work ethic and maturing temperament, has drawn Allegri to hail his enigmatic striker's progress. "I think he is playing very well," Allegri said. "Fortunately

Villas-Boas hails ´world-class´ Bale
Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has hailed Gareth Bale as 'world class' following his match-winning effort in their 2-1 win over Swansea.
The north London side saw off Swansea thanks to early goals from Jan Vertonghen and Bale, despite late pressure after Michu pulled a goal back for the home side.
The Welshman had a hand in both of Spurs' goals as he set up the first and netted the second himself, before preventing a Swansea equaliser late on, leading Villas-Boas to wax lyrical about the winger, as well as his side's overall performance.
