Villas-Boas hails Tottenham display

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas lauded his side's attacking play after their 3-0 win over Inter Milan at White Hart Lane on Thursday.
Goals from Gareth Bale, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen helped Tottenham to victory, putting them in pole position to reach the last eight of the Europa League ahead of the second leg at the San Siro on March 14.

While Villas-Boas expects a difficult encounter in Italy, he was delighted by Tottenham's performance on home soil.

"It was a full 90-minute performance with excellent attacking football," Villas-Boas told reporters.

"We tried to limit their chances and had so many opportunities. It was a great European night.

"Unfortunately, we're not through yet because we have to go there and the San Siro is a very difficult place to go."

Villas-Boas hinted that superstar Bale intentionally picked up a yellow card to avoid a suspension later in the competition.

Bale was booked for simulation in the 15th minute, when the hosts were leading 1-0 thanks to his opener.

"It's difficult but with this result, if he hadn't have got the card, it would not have cleared him. We took a risk, obviously, but we have talent throughout the squad," Villas-Boas said.

"We have now allowed Gareth to clean his yellow cards and hopefully we can make it through."

Inter Milan coach Andrea Stramaccioni said Tottenham were the better side, but rued missed chances which could have given the Serie A giants a greater chance of progressing.

"I think Tottenham were honestly superior tonight in different ways, but we suffered more than anything on a physical level," he said.

"Two of the three goals came from situations where we paid for their height and strength in the air.

"The real regret is we didn't make the most of those two great scoring opportunities as we could've kept the qualification a lot more open than it is now."
