Bayern turn attention back to Bundesliga
bayern, bundesliga
Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is confident his team will be able to switch focus from the Champions League back to the Bundesliga.
Heynckes' men appear to be running away with the domestic league crown, holding a 15-point advantage over second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

Bayern look set to make the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-1 win at Arsenal in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.

Speaking ahead of his side's clash against Werder Bremen on Saturday, Heynckes said his players were good enough to switch their attentions back to the Bundesliga.

"There were times when Bayern-Werder was a very special Bundesliga match," Heynckes said.

O´Neill denies Ambrose link
o neil , ambrose
Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has denied suggestions the club are set to move for Celtic centre-back Efe Ambrose.

The Nigeria international has quickly cemented his status as a key man for Celtic since arriving from Israeli side Ashdod for a fee of 1.5 million pounds in the off-season.

The 24-year-old's performances are believed to have drawn interest from several English Premier League clubs, but O’Neill has denied discussing Ambrose's future with Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

"It's been news to me. I've not spoken to Neil Lennon about Ambrose," O'Neill told the Sunderland Echo.

The defender was at fault for two goals and missed a glorious chance at the other end as the Scottish outfit ... Read more »

Ferguson praises Redknapp
ferguson
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Queens Park Rangers should have appointed Harry Redknapp earlier in the season.

The 65-year-old took the reins at Loftus Road on November 24 last year after Mark Hughes was sacked for leading QPR to just four points from their opening 12 games.

But, ahead of his side's meeting with QPR on Saturday, Ferguson said Redknapp's job might have been easier had he come in sooner.

"It's not easy when you're down at the bottom of the league. Harry will be the first to admit that,” the Scot told reporters.

"It may have helped him if he had gone a bit earlier, but with Harry's experience and ability to judge players, he will have a better chance than most ... Read more »

Martinez urges Wigan trio to forget contracts
martinez
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has told three of his players discussions over new deals cannot take place until survival is assured.

Franco Di Santo, Maynor Figueroa and Antolin Alcaraz will be able to leave the DW Stadium for free at the end of the season if they do not agree extensions to their contracts.

Martinez insists retaining the club's top-flight status should be the players' sole priority at the moment.

"We need to stay in the Premier League to be successful," the Spaniard told The Mirror. "Once we do that we can go into the individuals. Their contracts count for very little right now.

"It is pointless going into talks when the future is at stake and we are fighting for that. The club i ... Read more »

Morata concentrating on Deportivo
morata
Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata is wary of the threat a desperate Deportivo La Coruna will pose his side on Saturday.

Fernando Vazquez was appointed Deportivo's third coach of the campaign on February 11, with his side sitting bottom of La Liga.

They are eight points from safety with 14 matches remaining this season, and Morata said his side, who he insisted were focused on the task, needed to be careful.

"We know it is going to be a tough game because every team tries to do their best against Real Madrid," Morata said.

"Besides, they have a new coach and the players always want to fight for their place in the team.

"I am sure they will do their best to escape ... Read more »

Mulvey pleased with draw
mulvey
Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey was satisfied after staying in the A-League finals race with a determined 0-0 draw against Newcastle.

The Roar showed patches of their championship-winning form in the rain-soaked match with the result keeping the Queensland side just two points out of the six with five rounds remaining.

"It keeps us alive – that is the main thing," Mulvey said after the match.

"Is it a point gained or two points lost? I think you have to look at it as a point gained simply because it keeps us within striking distance of Newcastle.

"It is a point away from home. We were the team that has played our fourth game in 10 days and I don't think you could tell the difference."

Lambert: Benteke staying at Villa
lambert
Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has quashed speculation linking striker Christian Benteke with a move away from the club in the off-season.

The Belgian international has notched 15 goals for Villa since his seven-million pound move from Genk, and has reportedly attracted interest from several English Premier League clubs.

Lambert is unmoved by such speculation, and is adamant the 22-year-old will remain at the club for the foreseeable future.

"Christian is playing very well for us and that's the main thing. It doesn't concern me who he is linked with and who he is not linked with," Lambert told reporters ahead of Saturday's trip to Arsenal.

"It proves he's doing well for me and doing well f ... Read more »
