Laudrup coy on future amid City rumours
Swansea manager Michael Laudrup is focused on the League Cup final against Bradford despite speculation linking him with jobs elsewhere.

The Dane has been linked with Manchester City and Real Madrid on the eve of the Wembley cup final, but Laudrup insists he is completely focused on the match with Bradford.

"I think it's not the moment to talk about the future," he told reporters.

"I think we are again, three days from maybe the most important game, or at least one of the most important games in the history of this club so to talk of something else, I think it would be a little ruthless in this moment. So let's focus on the big thing."

The former World Player of the Year said winning the League Cup with ... Read more »

Redknapp targets 20 more points
Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp says his side need at least 20 more points in their remaining 12 games to beat the drop.

The Loftus Road side are seven points adrift of safety at the foot of the English Premier League, with the first game a home fixture to league leaders Manchester United.

But Redknapp still believes it is possible to avoid relegation despite his side looking set for the drop.

"We need to close the gap," Redknapp told reporters.

"We need 20 points at least. Whether that would be enough I don't know but we have to try for that.

"Of course I feel we can do it. If I stop believing everyone does. I still think it is possible with 12 games to go and lots of ... Read more »

Stadium shut-out for Corinthians
Corinthians have been ordered to play home matches in the Copa Libertadores behind closed doors after a 14-year-old fan was killed by a flare.

The ban will remain in place until the South American football federation, CONMEBOL, make a final ruling on the matter.

During Corinthians' first defence of the trophy against San Jose earlier this week, a firecracker was launched into San Jose fans from the away section, killing a Bolivian supporter. The object penetrated the young fans eye and he died before reaching hospital.

Fans of the World Club Cup winners will be denied admission to next Wednesday's home tie against Colombian side Millonarios and subsequent home matches against Tijuana and San Jose.

A-League: Newcastle 0 Brisbane 0
The Newcastle Jets and Brisbane Roar played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at a rain-soaked Hunter Stadium in the A-League on Friday.

Newcastle goalkeeper Mark Birighitti and opposite number Michael Theo produced some top saves to keep clean sheets as the game ebbed and flowed with the Jets starting well before the Roar took control until half-time.

The home side came out more determined in the second half and forced several strong saves from Theo.

For the most part of the second half, the Roar attacked on the counter but could not get past the Jets glovesman and in the end both sides had to settle for a draw.

The draw sees both sides stay in the hunt for a finals place with Newcastle climbing to 27 ... Read more »

Casillas nearing Real return
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas says he should make his return within the next four weeks.

The Spain international broke his thumb in the Copa del Rey clash with Valencia in January and underwent surgery.

The operation saw Casillas undergo a total reconstruction of his thumb.

"I have a month to go. Things are really looking up," Casillas told reporters during the opening ceremony for the new club shop at the Bernabeu.

"The doctor expects me to be back in another four weeks. I'm doing active exercise and I can move my finger now."

Casillas will have a fight on his hands to reclaim his starting slot, having been dropped by Jose Mourinho prior to injury and with Diego Lopez arr ... Read more »

Frustrated Terry demands improvement
Chelsea captain John Terry was disappointed with his side's Europa League display against Sparta Prague despite progressing to the last 16.

The Czech side bossed possession at Stamford Bridge and levelled the tie on aggregate after just 17 minutes through David Lafata.

A last-gasp Eden Hazard strike saved Chelsea after a struggle to break down their opponents and Terry was keen to underline his dissatisfaction with the display.

"We're disappointed with the way we started that but we're delighted to go through," he told ESPN after the game.

"We left it as late as we could and sometimes that's the best way, but not our best performance but we're in the next round so we're happy with that.

Balotelli backs under-fire Mancini
mancini
Mario Balotelli has urged former side Manchester City to stick with Roberto Mancini, claiming the Italian has the backing of the players.

City manager Mancini has come under pressure due to the club's poor performance in the Champions League, where they finished bottom of their group, while they are also 12 points behind Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table.

However, the controversial striker - who had his fair share of run-ins with his ex-boss - indicated that the 48-year-old is well-liked among the players and would be impossible to replace.

"There is nobody better for City," Balotelli was quoted as saying by The Sun. "Most importantly, the players like him.

"If you asked who ... Read more »
