champions leagueMario Mandzukic opened the scoring midway through the second half before substitute Claudio Pizarro added a second right at the death
Bayern Munich booked its place in the semifinals of the Champions League with another commanding defeat of Juventus, the newly-crowned German champion triumphing 2-0 in Turin on Wednesday night to seal a 4-0 aggregate win over its Italian counterpart.

The Bavarians soaked up what little the Bianconeri could throw at them during the early exchanges of both halves before eventually putting the outcome of the tie beyond all doubt when Mario Mandzukic converted from close range just after the hour mark.

Juventus tried to rally but there was to be n ... Read more »

Barcelona 1-1 Paris Saint-Germain
champions leagueThe Blaugrana struggled in both halves of the field with Messi on the bench, but the arrival of their talisman in the second half helped them find the goal they needed to progress
Barcelona was forced to dig deep to book its place in the Champions League semifinals on away goals with a narrow 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in their quarterfinal second-leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

With Lionel Messi at less than full fitness and consigned to the bench for over an hour, the Catalans appeared blunted up front, and were run ragged at the back by the ferocity of PSG's counterattacking approach.

And it was one such sequence that saw the Ligue 1 side break the dead ... Read more »

Spurs will attack Basel, says Sigurdsson
basel
Tottenham midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson believes they will have to attack from the start in their Europa League quarter-final tie with Basel.
The Iceland international played a crucial role in the first-leg match-up, striking the equalising goal as Spurs came from two goals down to level the scores.

However, anything less than victory in Switzerland will send Spurs out of the competition, but after surviving a scare in the first leg Sigurdsson is eager to book a place in the semi-finals.

"We need to go out there and win the game," the 23-year-old told the club's official website.

Rodgers unfazed by Benitez return talk
rodgers
Brendan Rodgers is not threatened by talk of a potential return to Liverpool for former Anfield manager Rafael Benitez.
The interim Chelsea boss is expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season and has suggested he will one day take charge of the Merseyside outfit again.

But Rodgers is confident that, having elected not to pursue Benitez in the summer, he has the full backing of the Liverpool board.

"I haven't seen the statements but I've heard plenty of people talk about it," Rodgers told reporters.

"Rafa had a suc ... Read more »

Gerrard aware of England challenges
gerrard
England skipper Steven Gerrard says his side have a big mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
The Three Lions sit two points adrift of Group H leaders Montenegro following a 1-1 stalemate in Podgorica on March 26 with four matches left to play in the campaign, and risk missing out on automatic qualification.

Roy Hodgson's side have faced increasing criticism as a result, but Liverpool midfielder Gerrard believes the quality of the Montenegro side has been underplayed and remains focussed on qualifying for Brazil.

"We've got a really big challenge ahead of us. We want to ... Read more »

Angry Pellegrini blasts Scottish ref
pellegrini
Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini has slammed referee Craig Thomson after his side's exit from the Champions League on Tuesday.
Borussia Dortmund advanced to the semi-finals after scoring twice in additional time to clinch a 3-2 win in the second leg at Signal Iduna Park.

While Eliseu's goal which put Malaga ahead 2-1 in the 82nd minute was offside, so was Dortmund's winner, scored by Felipe Santana.

Pellegrini criticised the officials for their failure to rule out Santana's tap in, which would have seen Malaga advance on the away goals rule.

Al-Thani: Malaga victims on racism
al thani
Malaga owner Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Thani has alleged his side's elimination from the Champions League was due to racism.
In the wake of Malaga's 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, in which a controversial late goal denied them a spot in the semi-final of Europe's premier club competition, the outspoken Qatari declared he wants the closing stages of the game looked into due to apparent ill-treatment of his club.

"This is not football but racism clear of all," Al-Thani posted on his official Twitter account.

"I hope to open a thorough UEFA investigation regarding the Spanish club (which went ... Read more »
