Buffon hails Celtic spirit
Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales says there is still all to play for in the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with PSG.
La Liga outfit Valencia suffered a 2-1 home defeat to the French giants in the first leg on Tuesday, with Adil Rami's last-minute strike and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's red card renewing their hopes after they trailed 2-0 late in the match.

"It's a bad result for us but we have hope. We knew they had quality up front and they showed that," Canales told reporters after the game.

"There is still a lot left in this tie and – even though we know it will be difficult – we will look to score early over there to give ourselves a chance."

Head coach Ernesto Valverde also spoke about the challenge his ... Read more »

Pardew seeking Europa League crown
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has expressed his desire to deliver Europa League success to the Premier League club.
Pardew's side face Ukrainian outfit Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday and though they are just two points and four places above the Premier League relegation zone, the Englishman says he will not rest key personnel.

English sides have often treated the Europa League as an inconvenience, but Pardew is proud to be in the competition and determined to make it worthwhile.

"It's competition we'd all love to win," Pardew told his club's official website.

"It's difficult to get through the group stage, make no mistake, so we don't want that hard work to be for nothing.

"But the last 16 is in our rea ... Read more »

Pastore: We should have scored more
Javier Pastore feels his PSG side should have beaten Valencia by a bigger margin in Tuesday's Champions League encounter.
Goals from Ezequiel Lavezzi and Pastore helped PSG to a 2-0 lead in the first leg of the round-of-16 tie, but Adil Rami pegged one back in the closing stages of the game and PSG had to settle for a 2-1 win.

"There's no doubt we could have left here with a greater winning margin. Nevertheless, we have to leave feeling some contentment because we got the win, which was what we aimed for, and that's the key conclusion which we'll take away with us," Pastore said.

"To a great extent it all went to plan. We'd planned to stay calm, make sure we controlled the ball and coped with their strengths and then break quickly and effectively on ... Read more »

McQueen tipping Carrick to shine
Former Manchester United star Gordon McQueen is backing Michael Carrick to star in their Champions League clash with Real Madrid.
The midfielder has enjoyed arguably his best season in a United shirt in 2012/13 but there remain critics who insist that he has failed to deliver on the big stage, particularly in the Champions League.

McQueen believes the 31-year-old has the chance to silence his detractors against a side who boast one of the best players in the world in Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carrick suggested on Monday it might take three players to keep the Portuguese superstar quiet but McQueen is confident Sir Alex Ferguson will entrust the England midfielder with the role in Wednesday's match.

"Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the ... Read more »

Buffon hails Celtic spirit
Gianluigi Buffon feels Celtic deserve respect for their performance in Tuesday's 3-0 Champions League loss against Juventus.
Goals from Alessandro Matri, Claudio Marchisio and Mirko Vucinic helped Juve to a comfortable victory, but Buffon has stressed they cannot afford to take the second leg of the round-of-16 tie lightly.

"Celtic are an excellent side and they showed that tonight," Buffon told reporters.

"We're not through yet. It's not good for us to be too relaxed. We must remain focused and keep showing Celtic the respect they deserve.

"We set out to attack them but struggled to get into our rhythm so we had to settle for what we could manage, which was to defend well and break forward on the counter. We did a great job ... Read more »
