La Rocca re-signs with Wanderers
Italian defender Iacopo La Rocca has signed a new two-year deal at the Western Sydney Wanderers.
The 28-year-old – who played in Lazio's youth team and signed for the Wanderers from Swiss giants Grasshopper – has impressed in defence this campaign, making 13 appearances and scoring one goal.

And Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic was delighted at La Rocca signing a fresh contract, which will keep him at the A-League club until the end of the 2014/15 season.

"Iacopo is very good on the ball and his distribution is a real asset of his and we feel that he can help us move forward in the near term and the long term," Popovic said.

"He is a quality player and a quality person and we feel that he will only get better and better." ... Read more »

Berlusconi: Balotelli remark ´an affectionate one´
AC Milan vice-president Paolo Berlusconi says Mario Balotelli was not offended by his recent racist remark.
Berlusconi, who is the brother of AC Milan president Silvio, was filmed using offensive language in reference to the striker.

The vice-president was heard saying before Sunday's clash with Udinese: "Let's go and watch our household's little n****r."

But Berlusconi, who was pictured smiling with the striker at the club's training ground, said the former Manchester City striker understood how the comment had been intended.

"I spoke to Balotelli, though in reality there was no need, seeing as he is an intelligent lad," Berlusconi told Milan Channel.

"He had already understood my phrase was an affect ... Read more »

Robben proud of young Netherlands team
Netherlands star Arjen Robben praised the team's performance despite failing to beat Italy in a dominant performance.

The Dutch failed to convert chances in the 1-1 draw in a friendly at Amsterdam ArenA with Italian substitute Marco Verratti's stoppage time equaliser cancelling on Jeremain Lens 33rd-minute opener.

"I think that we should pay our team a compliment. It's a real shame that the score ended 1-1 but I don't think we should emphasise that, because we played well during this match," Robben said.

"When you look at our team you see a lot of young guys and we also had two guys (Daley Blind and Ola John) make their debut, so I think we've done well.

"We didn't play just any country, we played Italy. A ... Read more »

Premier League clubs agree to spending controls
English Premier League clubs have voted in favour of introducing a domestic financial fair play model from next season.
The breakaway group of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham failed to push through a strict 'break-even' rule at a showdown meeting in London on Thursday but club bosses agreed to a compromise system that limits a club's losses to 105 million pounds over a three-season period.

The top-flight clubs also approved a cap on wage increases as the Premier League imposed the first spending controls by a major European league.

It was agreed in principle that there will be a ceiling on how much of the funds distributed by the Premier League are spent on players' wages each season from 2013/14 to 2015/16.

CAF suspend Tunisian referee
Tunisian referee Slim Jedidi has been suspended for his poor officiating during the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final on Wednesday.
Burkina Faso advanced to the final of the tournament with a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Ghana, but not before several controversial decisions by Jedidi.

Paul Put's men were denied an early penalty before Jedidi awarded Ghana a soft spot-kick, while the winners also had a goal ruled out and Jonathan Pitroipa sent off.

Hicham El Amrani, general secretary of the Confederation of African Football, said a better standard of officiating had been expected.

"CAF was not happy with the standard of refereeing in the match," he said. "We know they can make mistakes, but we expected a better level of referee ... Read more »

Stella set to start for Victory
Former Rangers attacker Francesco Stella will make his starting debut for Melbourne Victory against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Stella, who joined Victory from the fallen Scottish giants last month, scored three goals off the bench in the club's National Youth League win over Central Coast Mariners at the weekend.

With Mark Milligan away on international duty and Nick Ansell injured, Stella will be promoted alongside Jonathan Bru in a reshuffled side on Friday.

"Francesco's been training well, so we want to give him an opportunity just to have a look at him," coach Ange Postecoglou said.

"We still think there's heaps of improvement in him.

"He's only just getting to ... Read more »

Aguero dreams big for Argentina
Sergio Aguero hopes Argentina can continue to play in the manner which saw them defeat Sweden 3-2 as they build towards World Cup 2014.

Alejandro Sabella's side played some wonderful attacking football in their international friendly on Wednesday, and the Manchester City man was delighted that the Albiceleste got off to a winning start in 2013.

"The most important thing was to win the first game of the year. We always dream of big things and hopefully we can continue like this," Aguero said.

The 24-year-old netted a delightful lob to make it 2-1, just one minute after Jonas Olsson had cancelled out Gonzalo Higuain's opener.

And he admitted that he never had a second thought about lifting his shot over the keeper ... Read more »
