World number one Novak Djokovic survived a scare before beating Fabio Fognini in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.

Djokovic won all but one of the first 11 games before Fognini mounted an unlikely comeback, forcing a third set in which the Serb prevailed to take a 6-0 5-7 6-2 win at Indian Wells.

"I had a very bad game at 4-2, couple of unforced errors, got him back in the match. Next thing you know, we're one set all and a couple of tight games," Djokovic said.

"He's a good player on this surface. He loves playing on slow surfaces. He made me work. He made me earn my points. In the end, I have done what I needed to do."

Former champion Maria Sharapova overcame Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro to reach the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday.

The world number three, seeded second at Indian Wells, won four of 10 break points on her way to a 7-5 6-3 victory in one hour and 18 minutes.

Suarez Navarro led 5-4 in the first set and 3-2 in the second, but failed to hold on as Sharapova, who won the tournament in 2006, upped the ante.

"I thought it was a tough one. She's a quality player, capable of playing some really good tennis," Sharapova said. 

"There are a few things I want to improve on, but I was happy I got through on not a great day."

Javier Zanetti says Inter Milan are slowly starting to lose belief as they continue to struggle to find their best form in the second half of the season.

Inter were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League last Thursday, and they were dealt another huge blow on Sunday when Bologna proved to be too strong at San Siro (1-0), much to the disappointment of Zanetti - who played his 600th match for the club.

"It's a tough time, you lose a bit of belief when things aren't going well," the Argentine told the club's official website.

Cleber Reis doubled Ponte Preta's advantage on 55 minutes before Danielzinho dragged Sao Caetano back into it with just over 20 minutes remaining.

But the away side failed to take advantage of the momentum with Alemao making the points safe with two minutes to go to.

Ponte Preta join Sao Paulo on 23 points after the league leaders played out a 0-0 draw with Palmeiras.

Benfica reclaimed top spot on the Liga Sagres table after they thrashed Gil Vicente 5-0 at the Estadio da Luz on Sunday.

After Porto's win over Estoril on Friday, Benfica knew nothing less than a win would see them move back to the top of the ladder and they wasted little time in hitting the front with Maxi Pereira scoring with just 12 minutes on the clock.

Eduardo Salvio doubled the home side's advantage 10 minutes later before Lorenzo Melgarejo added to the tally just after the half-hour mark.

Second-half goals from Lima and Nicolas Gaitan added gloss to the thumping win as Benfica restored their two point lead over Porto in the title race.
