City ´still keen´ on Al Ain star
city
Al Ain star Omar Abdulrahman is still a target for Premier League champions Manchester City, academy chief Brian Marwood said.
The 21-year-old attacker had a week-long trial at the Etihad Stadium earlier this season but saw a permanent deal fall through due to work-permit issues, but Marwood stressed the club are still hoping to bring the UAE international to Manchester.

Speaking to Sport 360, Marwood said: "(Abdulrahman) is a very talented young player. Our chairman organised for him to come over and spend some time with us.

"I think he enjoyed the experience, we enjoyed having him with us. He's come back here and done very well and is a real talent.

"There are some real challenges getting a player like him to be able to ... Read more »

Rodgers plans to lift Anfield quality
rodgers
Brendan Rodgers insists Liverpool will be looking for quality rather than quantity when they attempt to strengthen their squad this summer.
The Reds are currently in a rich vein of form, winning their past three Premier League games on the bounce - scoring 13 goals in the process - with only Manchester United and Tottenham picking up more points since the start of December.

Rodgers believes the January additions of Daniel Sturridge and Phillippe Coutinho have been key to this revival, and insists further quality additions in the summer could see the club competing at the top again.

"It is quality we are after now, not quantity," he told reporters.

"We see the impact of Coutinho, and Sturridge's quality, in ... Read more »

Wenger one of the best
wenger
Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes believes Arsene Wenger has been 'one of the best managers in Europe' for the past decade.
Arsenal and Bundesliga giants Bayern face off again on Wednesday, with the Bavarians holding a commanding 3-1 first-leg lead in their Champions League last-16 tie.

The 67-year-old is set to leave the Allianz Arena in the summer to make way for Pep Guardiola, and Heynckes said it would be 'very sad'" if Wenger was to leave Arsenal on the back of a sustained period without silverware.

"Arsene Wenger has not just brought success to Arsenal," Heynckes told reporters.

"He is a very creative manager, producing almost fantasy football. The football they have played is fantastic year after year. ... Read more »

Seattle seal semis spot
concacaf
The Seattle Sounders pulled off a remarkable comeback in their CONCACAF Champions League tie to beat Tigres UANL 3-2 on aggregate.
Heading into their home tie down 1-0, the MLS side then conceded first at CenturyLink Field before scoring the minimum three goals to reach the semi-finals of the continental tournament for the first time.

Second-half goals from DeAndre Yedlin, Djimi Traore and Eddie Johnson saw Seattle to the brilliant victory - 3-1 on the night - although they had the benefit of playing against 10 men for the second half.

Tigres midfielder Manuel Viniegra was dismissed on the stroke of half-time when he picked up his second yellow card within the space of eight minutes, and while Ricardo Ferretti's men had two goals up their sle ... Read more »

Velez Sarsfield beat Penarol
Uruguayan giants Penarol are in danger of missing the knockout stages of the Copa Libertadores after losing on Tuesday.
Penarol – who have won the competition five times – dropped their second Group 4 match on the trot, losing 3-1 against Velez Sarsfield of Argentina.

They still sit second in the group, but only by goals scored, with Ecuadorian side Emelec equal on points and goal difference in third.

The latest defeat came despite Fabian Estoyanoff's 24th-minute penalty, which gave Penarol the lead.

Velez Sarsfield were playing in front of their home fans though, and they quickly mustered a response when Penarol goalkeeper Enrique Bologna scored an own goal.

Federico Insua then bagged a 75th-minute penalty before a late Jonathan Copete strike wrapped up the win for the Argentines.

Terim buoyant after Galatasaray win
terim bouiant
Galatasaray coach Fatih Terim was thrilled with his team after their 3-2 win at Schalke saw them move into the Champions League quarter-finals.
The Turkish champions were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg but secured a famous victory when Umut Bulut's stoppage-time winner put the tie beyond doubt.

After falling behind to an early Roman Neustadter strike, Gala responded with two first-half goals from Hamit Altintop and Burak Yilmaz.

Michel Bastos levelled for Schalke just after the hour mark, and Gala looked like they would go through on the away-goals rule until Bulut made sure of victory.

"I kiss all my players on the forehead. We should have scored even more during the first half, they were extraordinary," Te ... Read more »

Allegri laments Milan luck
allegri
Massimiliano Allegri says AC Milan were 'centimetres' away from qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Milan's 2-0 advantage from the first meeting in Italy was wiped out by half-time thanks to a Lionel Messi double, before second-half goals from David Villa and Jordi Alba sealed a 4-0 win and a 4-2 aggregate triumph.

The match could have been much different had M'Baye Niang found the back of the net instead of the post, minutes before Messi made it 2-0, and Allegri said the game was always likely to be decided by such small margins.

"Of course, qualification was always going to be a matter of centimetres. We hit the post with Niang, then conceded with Messi," Allegri told reporters.
