Premier League: Stoke 0:2 Manchester United
premier league
Manchester United moved a step closer to regaining the Premier League title with a 2-0 win at lowly Stoke on Sunday.
An early goal from Michael Carrick and a second-half Robin van Persie penalty wrapped up all three points for Sir Alex Ferguson's men, but they were rarely troubled by a disappointing Stoke who are now more deeply embroiled in the relegation fight to stay in England's top flight.

It took just four minutes for the champions-elect to take the lead, as the Potters failed miserably to clear a van Persie corner.

After several hacks at the ball by the home defenders, it eventually fell to Carrick, who toe-poked into the corner of the net from the edge of the six- ... Read more »

Roura relishes Bayern semi battle
roura
Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura is pleased his side have drawn Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Barcelona drew 3-3 on aggregate with French club Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals but progressed on away goals.

That setup a final-four tie with newly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern, who they defeated 5-1 on aggregate on their way to the 2009 European title.

The draw also sets up a potential El Clasico meeting with rivals Real Madrid in the final at Wembley in May.

"It's true we always tend to ... Read more »

Inter primed for Cagliari, says Stramaccioni
stramaccioni
Andrea Stramaccioni says Inter have put last week's controversial defeat to Atalanta behind them ahead of Cagliari on Sunday.
The Milanese giants crumbled to a 4-3 reverse at the hands of Atalanta, but the result was promptly followed by an angry post-match outburst from their coach who felt that a 'non-existent' penalty inspired their opponents' comeback.

But when asked about the refereeing appointment of Domenico Celi for the trip to Trieste, Stramaccioni made it clear that his players were no longer dwelling on the past and had no concerns about their attitude towards the official.

Moyes targeting Champions League
moyes
Everton boss David Moyes has his sights set on Champions League football after his team's 2-0 win over QPR on Saturday.
Goals from Darron Gibson and Victor Anichebe were enough to give Everton all three points at Goodison Park.

Moyes' team are just three points adrift of the top four following the win over Rangers, and face a crucial clash with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, which Moyes believes will define their season.

"If we can go and win at Arsenal I think you can say we've got a chance of being involved in the Champions League," Moyes said.

Allegri calls for action on racist chants
allegri
Massimiliano Allegri has condemned the racist chanting from Fiorentina fans towards Mario Balotelli last week.
Balotelli was subjected to abusive chants during the 2-2 draw last Sunday, and the Milan coach has urged an end to the problem to encourage younger fans to attend matches.

"I heard them (the chants) and I hope that last Sunday was the last time it happens. If we want to bring families and children to the stadium, things have to change. Fiorentina were fined," Allegri told a press conference.

Allegri then praised his side for coming back from a poor start to their campaign, insisting that ... Read more »

Allardyce delighted with Carroll form
carroll
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce said he always felt Andy Carroll would find form after the on-loan forward scored his fifth goal in seven games.
The Liverpool striker made the temporary move to Upton Park last year after Brendan Rodgers took the helm at Anfield, but he failed to make an instant impact after suffering a number of injuries.

The 24-year-old scored the equaliser in West Ham's 1-1 draw with Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday, cancelling out Gaston Ramirez's opener, and Allardyce was pleased to see his faith in the striker vindicated.

"It's marvellous, we've been waiting for it and I ... Read more »

Adkins hails goalkeeper McCarthy
mcarthy
Reading manager Nigel Adkins has praised goalkeeper Alex McCarthy after a succession of brilliant saves earned his team a point against Liverpool.
The 23-year-old produced an inspired display to frustrate the visitors and keep a clean sheet in his side's increasingly desperate bid for Premier League survival.

It was his first appearance since November but there were no signs of rustiness as he produced save after save, and Adkins was grateful for the superb display.

"All the headlines tomorrow will be about Alex McCarthy, won't they? He's put a fantastic goalkeeping display in. He's been out inju ... Read more »
