Ajax went outright second in the Eredivisie after earning a 2-0 away win at RKC Waalwijk while Feyenoord fell to defeat on Sunday.

First-half goals to Nikolas Moisander and Christian Eriksen saw the visitors to a comfortable victory at Mandermakers Stadion, as Frank de Boer's men went within three points of leaders PSV.

They also created a three-point gap to third side Twente and fourth-placed Feyenoord, with the latter succumbing to a surprise 3-2 loss away to PEC Zwolle.

The day began horribly for Ronald Koeman's side, as they trailed 2-0 within seven minutes by means of an own goal to striker Graziano Pelle and a Darryl Lachman strike.

Serie A wrap: Napoli blow chance to close gap on Juventus
Napoli failed to fully exploit Serie A leaders Juventus' slip-up as the second-placed side were held 0-0 by Sampdoria on Sunday.

Champions Juve were beaten 1-0 away to Roma on Saturday, giving Walter Mazzarri's men a gilt-edged chance to close to within two points of the leaders with a win over 12th-placed Sampdoria.

But the Naples club couldn't find a way past Sampdoria goalkeeper Sergio Romero, as they were frustrated by a scoreless stalemate at the Stadio San Paolo.

A Marco Sau brace guided Cagliari to a 2-0 away win over Pescara at the Stadio Adriatico-Giovanni Cornacchia.

Skipper Steven Gerrard converted a first-half spot kick before second-half goals from Phillipe Coutinho, Jose Enrique, Luis Suarez and a Daniel Sturridge penalty rewarded the hosts for a commanding display.

Caceres offers no excuses for Roma defeat
Juventus defender Martin Caceres insists his side cannot look for excuses after their Serie A loss to Roma.

Francesco Totti's thunderbolt earned the hosts all three points on Saturday evening, and Caceres has refused to blame the Bianconeri's tough midweek trip to Celtic in the UEFA Champions League as a factor in their lacklustre performance.

"I didn't like the game," the 24-year-old told reporters.

"We were not in our best shape and when that happens mistakes are made.

"I don't know if we were tired or what, but we mustn't look for excuses. We are Juventus. When you wear this jersey, excuses are of no use.

"Now we must work during the week and try to understand what ... Read more »

Flamini: Fabregas forgets to defend
AC Milan midfielder Mathieu Flamini says Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas 'forgets to defend' at times, ahead of their clash in the Champions League.

Flamini, who played alongside Fabregas during his Arsenal career, was full of praise for the Spain star's abilities, but has hinted at a possible weakness in the 25-year-old which the Rossoneri could look to exploit on Wednesday.

"Fabregas is a player with many qualities, as he has incredible vision and is also very good in front of goal," he told Milan Channel.

"As for his defects, at times he 'forgets' to defend."

Barcelona head into the tie as clear favourites to progress, and Flamini conceded he would rather have faced different opponents at this stage i ... Read more »

Top four still Chelsea´s priority
Rafael Benitez insists Chelsea's priority remains finishing in the top four of the Premier League despite their FA Cup win on Sunday.

Chelsea advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Brentford.

Juan Mata, Oscar, Frank Lampard and John Terry scored the goals as the Blues rallied to overcome a spirited Brentford side after half-time and book their passage into the next round of a competition they have won in four of the last six years.

Afterwards, Benitez praised his side's clinical finishing but reiterated that the club's primary ambition is to secure Champions League football next season.

"The priority is to be in the top four, and if we can progress in the cup comp ... Read more »

FA Cup: Manchester City 4 Leeds United 0
Manchester City cruised into the last eight of the FA Cup with a classy display as they registered a 4-0 victory over Leeds United.

Yaya Toure opened the scoring early on after a powerful run, before Sergio Aguero bagged from the spot to double the lead inside 15 minutes.

Carlos Tevez's early second-half goal and Aguero's cool finish compounded Leeds' miserable afternoon, and the 2011 winners will go into the quarter-finals as one of the big favourites.

Roberto Mancini rang in the changes, with only five of the starting line-up from the 3-1 defeat at Southampton keeping their place. Costel Pantilimon came in for Joe Hart while Gareth Barry was left out of the squad entirely, and James Milner earned a start against his former clu ... Read more »
