Ferguson praises outgoing Gill
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has praised David Gill after the chief executive announced he will step down in June.

Gill has called time on his current at Old Trafford after 10 years in the position, and while he will remain as a director on the board, he will be concentrating on the 2013 UEFA Executive Committee elections as the FA's candidate.

The 71-year-old manager suggests that while he and the 55-year-old have had disagreements in the past, he admires the chief executive's honesty and wishes he could have persuaded him to stay.

"I have been at United for over 26 years and for 23 of those years my boss has been one of only two men: Martin Edwards, who brought me to the club, and David Gill. I have enjoyed working ... Read more »

Europa League preview: Olympiacos, Napoli face tough tasks
Napoli and Olympiacos face an uphill battle to create Europa League history and avoid elimination from the competition on Thursday.

Napoli went down 3-0 to Viktoria Plzen in the opening leg of their last-32 tie, while Levante accounted for the Greek side by the same score.

No team has ever bounced back from a three-goal first-leg deficit in the competition's current format, leaving Plzen and Levante in the box seat to advance to the round of 16.

Olympiacos are one of two Champions League sides playing catch-up in the second leg. The other, CFR Cluj, trail Inter Milan 2-0.

Cluj's fellow Romanian club Steaua Bucharest are also up against the odds, needing to overturn a 2-0 loss to stop Ajax from moving a s ... Read more »

Mixed feelings for Robben
Arjen Robben says he had 'mixed feelings' in the aftermath of Bayern Munich's 3-1 win over Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The winger remains out of favour under Jupp Heynckes this season, and goals from Toni Kroos, Thomas Mueller and Mario Mandzukic will not have given the Allianz Arena coach reason to reconsider who starts in attack for the Bavarians.

The Netherlands winger, who came off the bench in the second half, told NOS: "I am happy because we won 3-1 at Arsenal in the Champions League. We made a big step towards the quarter-final.

"I've had a difficult time with a lot of different injuries (this season). I had hoped that I would get my spot in the starting XI back sooner.

"I'll just ... Read more »

Clarke: England´s loss in West Brom´s gain
West Bromwich Albion manager Steve Clarke said the pressure of playing for England was too much for goalkeeper Ben Foster to handle.

The Albion keeper, who is enjoying one of his best spells in the Premier League, announced his international retirement just under two years ago.

The 29-year-old was once tipped to be the England goalkeeper for the next decade early in his career at Manchester United however he failed to become a first-team regular Old Trafford and left the club in 2010 for Birmingham before moving onto West Brom.

However, on the back of Foster's man of the match performance against Liverpool in his team's latest outing in the Premier League, Clarke said England's loss is his gain.

Borini staying on Merseyside, says agent
Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is happy at the club and will not be leaving Anfield, according to his agent.

The former Swansea City striker's representative Marco De Marchi said his client has no interest in a move to Serie A with Fiorentina despite a difficult first year with the Reds.

Borini has already missed a large portion of the season with a fractured foot, and is expected to miss the rest of the campaign after dislocating his shoulder against his former club in Sunday's 5-0 rout.

"His future is definitely at Liverpool," De Marchi told The Sun.

"He's signed a long-term deal with one of the most glorious sides in the world game.

"From now think only to work hard to g ... Read more »

Friedel fears Lyon comeback
Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel said their lead over Lyon in their Europa League last-16 tie is not enough.

Gareth Bale scored two fine free kicks to hand Andre Villas-Boas' side a slight advantage for the return leg, as Spurs wrapped up a 2-1 win at White Hart Lane.

Samuel Umtiti's wonder strike for the Ligue 1 side, however, gives Remi Garde's side a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

And while 41-year-old Friedel is confident Spurs can hit the French side on the counter as the hosts go searching for goals on Thursday, he is under no illusions as to the task that lies ahead.

"It's two good teams both trying to progress and it's by no means a massive advantage - just a small advantage," he t ... Read more »
