premier league, aston villa, arsenal
Arsenal eased the pressure on Arsene Wenger as a Santi Cazorla double gave them a 2-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Spaniard had given the Gunners an early lead after five minutes, before Andreas Weimann equalised for the visitors midway through the second half at the Emirates.

But Cazorla was at the ready to slot home with just minutes to go as the Gunners closed the gap on fourth-placed Tottenham to one point, extending Villa's miserable run to just one win in 10 games.

The hosts controlled possession with palpable ease and created the first chance of the game after just two minutes, with Jack Wilshere forcing an early save from Brad Guzan.

Roberto Martinez's men took the lead late in the first half through Arouna Kone, who quickly doubled the advantage just before the interval.

Maynor Figueroa made sure of the points early in the second half before Pavel Pogrebnyak was sent off to end any lingering hopes of a home fightback.

The win lifts Wigan above Aston Villa and out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Conte urges Juve focus
Juventus coach Antonio Conte says his side must treat their next 13 Serie A matches like World Cup finals if they are to retain their title.

Last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Roma saw Juve's lead at the top of Serie A cut to four points, and Conte has called on the supporters to act as the 12th man in the title run-in.

"We need to play 13 World Cup finals and dropping points could prove costly," Conte told the club's official website.

"Now is the time to urge the team on in the way they did last year and have done on certain occasions this season."

Juventus' next clash is against Conte's former side, Siena, and the 43-year-old warned his troops not to underestimate the in-form Tuscans, despite their lowly stan ... Read more »

Premier League: Fulham 1:0 Stoke City
An unstoppable volley from Dimitar Berbatov secured a 1-0 win for Fulham over Stoke City at Craven Cottage in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Bulgarian rifled home in first-half stoppage time after Stoke failed to clear Sascha Riether's searching cross from the right to take his tally to nine goals for the season.

A lively start to the match saw presentable chances squandered by both sides as first Jonathan Walters wasted an opportunity to really test Mark Schwarzer before Berbatov volleyed over the top after good work on the right flank by Riether.

The hosts did have the ball in the net in the 11th minute although referee Lee Probert correctly ruled that Bryan Ruiz had used his hand to convert following Damien Duff's in-swinging f ... Read more »

Fancy a run in defence, Wayne? Rooney brushes off illness to launch into tackle on Vidic during United training
Wayne Rooney has had to live a little bit in the shadow of Robin van Persie this season. And now it seems the Manchester United star is considering a stint in defence to claim back his place as the darling of Old Trafford.

Rooney has scored 13 goals in all competitions this season, 10 fewer than summer signing Van Persie, and in training today was seen throwing himself into tackles that would make team-mate Nemanja Vidic jealous.

Firm but fair: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was all action in training on Friday as he dived at the feet of Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic

The towering Serb was even on the receiving end of one well-timed sliding challenge.
