Manchester United v Reading preview: FA Cup quarter-final place at stake

Manchester United won a 4-3 thriller against Reading in the Premier League in December
Manchester United return to domestic action on Monday night as they welcome Reading to Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The draw for the quarter-finals has already been made and has thrown up the tantalising prospect of a home clash with reigning champions Chelsea or Middlesbrough, but United must first negotiate a tie against Brian McDermott's Royals.

Sir Alex Ferguson is set to rest a number of players but has made it clear he would love to win the FA Cup for the first time since 2004, as United set their sights on another Treble-winning campaign.

The Red Devils have already opened up a 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League and netted a crucial away goal in their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid last week as they drew 1-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reading's priority undoubtedly remains Premier League survival but a shock cup win over United would be a huge fillip for the club and McDermott's men travel to Manchester in decent form.

A 2-1 defeat at Stoke City last time out dropped Reading back into the bottom three, but they had previously been on a six-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.

The teams have already played out one thrilling game this season, with United winning 4-3 at the Madejski Stadium in December.
