Borussia Moenchengladbach coach Lucien Favre admitted his charges wasted too many chances in Thursday's 3-3 Europa League draw with Lazio.
Gladbach twice allowed Lazio to come from behind in the first leg of their last-32 tie, with Libor Kozak's 94th-minute equaliser handing the Rome club a share of the spoils.
"It was a crazy game in the second half," Favre said.
"We've been a little unlucky, but I've seen many positive things in our game.
"The first half was fine, we took the lead very early in the game and it was a deserved lead.
"After that Lazio had a couple of chances, but they hadn't been that dangerous."
Goals from Sergio Floccari and Libor Kozak gave Lazio a 2-1 lead in the second half, before Thorben Marx and Juan Arango struck to put the hosts back in front.
But Gladbach were unable to hold on as Lazio, reduced to 10 men earlier in the half, levelled proceedings at the death.
"We take a 3-2 lead and obviously we're very disappointed about the 3-3 draw," Favre said.
"We could have won it before the final whistle. We had two shots against the post and one missed penalty.
"That means we had many opportunities to score, but on the other side we conceded three goals.
"If we want to progress in the competition we need to win 1-0, or maybe 2-1.
"It'll be impossible to get a better result in the second leg.
"Theoretically we could also win 3-1, or maybe play out a 4-4 draw but that's not going to happen. We need to be realistic."
Lazio boss Vladimir Petkovic was understandably pleased with his team's efforts.
"It was a bit crazy at the end, as we dominated the match for so long and I am happy we played good football for 90 minutes," he said.
"We suffered too much on set plays, which doesn't happen to us every day. Kozak came on for the second half and certainly gave us the necessary push and created more space for Sergio Floccari.
"In the first half we tried, but after the first goal, we started to get passes wrong and lost our way. The team has great character and we saw it by the way they played right to the end for the result.
"I am very happy to have rediscovered the Lazio I last saw a few months ago. We are alive, playing good football and I hope we can take the same approach in the second leg with numerous fans putting pressure on the visitors the way we experienced it in Germany."
The return leg takes place in Rome on February 21.
