Bresnan has elbow operation

England paceman Tim Bresnan will be under pressure to be ready for their first home Test with New Zealand in May, following elbow surgery.

The Yorkshire fast bowler will miss up to two months to undergo rehabilitation on his right elbow, with May 16 his deadline if he is to return for the opener of a two-Test series with the Black Caps.

Looking further ahead, though, it seems the operation would have been undertaken with an eye towards the all-important home Ashes series with Australia, starting on July 10.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) played down the severity of the 27-year-old's problem via a statement.

"England and Yorkshire bowler Tim Bresnan has undergone an uncomplicated operation on his right elbow to remove extra bone and scar tissue," the ECB statement read.

"Bresnan will now commence a six-to-eight-week rehabilitation and back-to-bowling programme before returning to competitive cricket early in the summer."

Bresnan's injury ruled him out of England's tour of NZ, and was previously a concern in 2011 when he first had surgery on the problem area.

A veteran of 18 Tests and 69 one-day internationals, Bresnan was last in action on January 27 in England's seven-wicket ODI win over India in Dharamsala, with the paceman nabbing 4-45.
