Valkanis: Wanderers defeat derailed Reds
valkanis
Adelaide United coach Michael Valkanis said their horror defeat to Western Sydney Wanderers in mid-season marked the beginning of the end.
Valkanis believes his side's Round 12 disaster against the eventual minor premiers was the writing on the wall for the Reds, who were ousted from the A-League finals on Sunday with a 2-1 elimination final loss to Brisbane Roar at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Nudging top spot at the time, United were thumped 6-1 by the Wanderers four days before Christmas and never recovered.

The faltering Reds won just one of their last eight matches, seemingly worn down after a gruelli ... Read more »

Premier League: Liverpool 0:0 West Ham
premier league
Despite a dominating performance from Liverpool, a fantastic West Ham defensive display secured a well-deserved goalless draw at Anfield.
The hosts bossed possession in the first half but were unable to find their way through West Ham's defensive line, allowing the visitors to hit them on the counterattack with Mohamed Diame's lofted shot arguably being the best chance of the first period.

Liverpool continued their dominance after the restart and despite a multitude of chances and Daniel Sturridge having a goal rightly ruled out for offside, West Ham held on to pick up a point.

Brendan Rodgers named an unchanged starting 11 from the one that defeated Aston Villa 2-1 last ... Read more »

Serie A wrap: Juve edge past Pescara
pescara
Juventus increased their lead at the top of Serie A to 12 points with a 2-1 home victory over bottom side Pescara on Saturday.
Antonio Conte's team were beaten 2-0 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday, and they started the clash in a positive fashion against the struggling visitors.

But they had to wait until the 72nd minute to take the lead, and it came from a Mirko Vucinic penalty.

A short free-kick resulted in Arturo Vidal being roughly thrown to the ground by Guiseppe Rizzo, and Vucinic slammed the resulting spot-kick home.

Sabella´s daughter damns Messi
messi
The daughter of Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella has criticised Lionel Messi for a lack of effort while on international duty.
Messi, 25, has not replicated his record-breaking form seen at Barcelona when it comes to performing on the international stage.

And it has prompted some to question his dedication to Argentina, while others have questioned his effectiveness without the presence of his La Liga team-mates.

Speaking to Radio Del Plata, Vanessa Sabella claimed Messi lacks 'heart' and has urged the star to strike the balance required to scale the heights for country as he does for club. ... Read more »

Ancelotti sweating on Thiago fitness
ancelotti
PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti is concerned that defensive lynchpin Thiago Silva will be unable to take to the field against Barcelona on Wednesday.
The Brazil international has been nursing a knee injury and did not feature during the 2-0 Ligue 1 win against Rennes on Saturday, prompting Ancelotti to give a pessimistic outlook regarding a timely return to fitness.

"It is not very serious, but we have to wait. He feels a pain and I hope he will recover," Ancelotti told InfoSport after their victory.

"We will see in the coming days. I hope he will recover quickly."

wenger
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger praised his team's fighting spirit as his 10 men battled their way to a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.
The north London club were cruising thanks to two goals from Tomas Rosicky until Per Mertesacker conceded a penalty and was sent off for a foul on Shane Long, with James Morrison netting the resultant spot-kick.

Arsenal had to dig in to withstand a late onslaught from the Baggies, and Wenger was delighted with the strength and resolve displayed by his side after they were reduced to 10 men.

Hughton eyes home form for run-in
hughton
Norwich manager Chris Hughton hopes good home form will be enough to guarantee his side's Premier League status.
Norwich scored a 2-2 draw against Swansea on Saturday which pulled them into the relegation dogfight.

Hughton's side conceded a late Luke Moore goal to forfeit the lead, and the draw leaves the Canaries a mere five points above safety and without a win in five matches.

They now face a difficult run-in, with away trips to Arsenal and Manchester City yet to come as well as season-defining clashes with fellow relegation contenders Reading, Aston Villa and Stoke.
