Champions League Preview: Marseille - Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund must win at managerless Marseille to be sure of reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp's men – runners-up to Bayern Munich last season – currently sit second in Group F courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against Napoli.

Yet any slip up at the Stade Velodrome would give the Italian side, who host Arsenal on matchday six, an opportunity to qualify.

Victory will guarantee Dortmund's progression as they also have the edge over Arsenal, who currently hold a three-point cushion at the top of the group, when it comes to meetings between the two.

Striker Robert Lewandowski is confident his side have what it takes to perform under pressure in France.

He told Dortmund's official website: "I am sure that we will get there (to the last 16)."

However, Lewandowski and his team-mates suffered a blow at the weekend when a 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen saw Dortmund slip 10 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern.

Sven Bender and Nuri Sahin each suffered ankle injuries in that match and the former will definitely miss out against Marseille, with Sahin rated extremely doubtful.

While Dortmund's preparation for Wednesday's fixture can hardly be considered ideal, Marseille have suffered even greater disruption.

Coach Elie Baup was sacked on Saturday, 24 hours after a 1-0 defeat to Nantes that saw the south coast club lose further ground on the top three in Ligue 1.

Sporting director Jose Anigo has been placed in temporary charge of Marseille and will aim to prevent the team finishing the Champions League group stage without a point to their name.

Marseille were beaten 3-0 at Dortmund in October's reverse fixture, with Lewandowski scoring twice either side of a goal from Marco Reus.

Fifteen teams have previously ended the group stage pointless, although Marseille can perhaps take inspiration from a 3-0 home victory over Dortmund in the 2011-12 Champions League.

Premier League : Sunderland - Manchester City

Free-scoring Manchester City will be plotting to heap more misery on struggling Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side have scored 12 goals in their last two games against Norwich and CSKA Moscow, meaning Sunderland - who sit second-bottom in the Premier League - are likely to have their work cut out as they go in search of just their second win of the season.

City will be full of confidence having qualified for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League for the first time with a 5-2 beating of CSKA in midweek - a result that followed up a 7-0 hammering of Norwich last Saturday.

But they must address their away form if they are to challenge for the Premier League title, having won just once in five matches on their travels this term.

Pellegrini's men will also need to improve their poor recent record at Sunderland. The 2011-12 champions have lost 1-0 on each of their last three top-flight trips to the Stadium of Light.

However, in Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, City have a strike duo in fine form.

Aguero was named Premier League player of the month on Friday, after scoring nine goals in his last six games in all competitions.

Negredo, meanwhile, scored a hat-trick in the victory over CSKA, meaning he has five goals in his last three matches.

Negredo’s Spain international team-mate David Silva will play no part against Sunderland, though, after he was ruled out for up to a month with a calf injury sustained against CSKA.

The playmaker joins captain Vincent Kompany (thigh) and striker Stevan Jovetic (calf) on the sidelines, while Brazil international Fernandinho and centre-back Matija Nastasic will undergo fitness tests after they picked up knocks in midweek.

Second-bottom Sunderland failed to build on their 2-1 victory over arch-rivals Newcastle in Gus Poyet’s first home match in charge when they were beaten at Hull City last weekend.

A League Cup victory over Southampton in midweek was a tonic for Poyet’s charges, but they need to start picking up points in the league if they are to avoid a relegation scrap.

Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is a doubt after missing their midweek victory with concussion, but Wes Brown could make his first top-flight start since January 2012 after featuring against Southampton.

Striker Steven Fletcher is set to return to the starting line-up, but defender Andrea Dossena and midfielder Lee Cattermole are suspended after being sent off at Hull.

Premier League : Tottenham - Newcastle United

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will return for the visit of Newcastle United on Sunday after his concussion against Everton.

The Frenchman was knocked out following an accidental collision with Romelu Lukaku late in the game at Goodison Park last week, but got up and finished the match - a decision that sparked huge controversy.

Despite condemnation from various quarters, manager Andre Villas-Boas defended the club and denied any wrongdoing, insisting his keeper was fine to play the remainder of Sunday's 0-0 draw.

Brad Friedel stepped in for the UEFA Europa League triumph over Sheriff on Thursday as Tottenham secured their place in the last 32 with a 2-1 victory.

But Villas-Boas confirmed on Friday that Lloris would be back between the sticks for the showdown with Alan Pardew's men.

Jermain Defoe will hope to be handed his first Premier League start since the 3-0 loss to West Ham on October 6 after he became the club's all-time leading scorer in European competition with a second-half penalty against Sheriff.

Roberto Soldado, a £26million close-season signing from Valencia, has been preferred since then but the Spaniard's six-goal haul is three shy of the total achieved by his English team-mate this term.

Newcastle have proved an unpredictable prospect for opposing teams this term, with their shock victory over Chelsea last time out underlining their threat.

This result came hot on the heels of a morale-sapping 2-1 loss to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby - their third away defeat in five top-flight trips this season.

Newcastle have not generally enjoyed their visits to White Hart Lane, having returned empty handed from their last four, conceding 10 goals in the process.

But the triumph over Jose Mourinho's charges, which came courtesy of second-half goals from French duo Yoan Gouffran and Loic Remy, lifted Alan Pardew's side into the top half for the first time since mid-September and they will be in buoyant mood.

A defensive boost could be on the cards, too, with captain Fabricio Coloccini in line to return from a groin injury, though he may not be able to dislodge Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Mike Williamson following their efforts in keeping a clean sheet against Chelsea.

Midfielder Cheick Tiote, who limped off eight minutes into the second half versus Mourinho's team, is also likely to feature after overcoming a muscle strain.

The visitors will face a tough test in attack, with Tottenham boasting the second best defensive record in the top flight, having conceded just five goals - none of which have come against sides from outside of the English capital.

Tottenham continue to be without Danny Rose (foot) and Nacer Chadli (hamstring).

Fellaini seals Manchester United switch

Manchester United have secured the signing of Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini for a fee of £27.5million.

United boss David Moyes had pursued the Belgium international for much of the transfer window and finally got his man late on the last day.

A statement on Everton's official website confirmed: "Marouane Fellaini has moved to Manchester United for a £27.5m fee...Fellaini's exit ended a summer long period of speculation after the Belgium international emerged as one of former Everton manager David Moyes' prime targets for his new club."

Fellaini became Everton's club-record signing after arriving from Standard Liege for £15million in September 2008. He went on to make 177 appearances at Goodison Park, scoring 33 goals.

Originally a holding midfielder, Fellaini proved an attacking force for the Merseyside club under Moyes last season, scoring 11 times in 31 league games.

A bid for two Everton players from United - thought to be Fellaini and Leighton Baines - was rejected and labelled "derisory" by Everton in August, and while Baines does indeed appear set to stay on Merseyside, Fellaini has now finally made the switch to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, United appear to have missed out on a deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

Reports had suggested that the Premier League champions were prepared to meet a €36million buy-out clause in the attacking midfielder's contract at the Estadio San Mames, but a deal between United and the Spanish Football Federation - with whom the deal would have been concluded - remained unconfirmed as the deadline passed.

Transfer Wrap: La Liga

After a number of moves were thrashed out on a typically frantic transfer deadline day, we round up the biggest deals in La Liga.

Although Gareth Bale's reported world-record move from Tottenham to Real Madrid was confirmed before Monday, the Spanish capital still saw plenty of transfer action on the final day.

Real's cross-city rivals Atletico were busy, bringing in two players to help bolster Diego Simeone's squad.

Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld arrived for a reported €10million from Dutch champions Ajax, while Josuha Guilavogui made the switch to the Vicente Calderon from Saint-Etienne.

But, along with officially unveiling Bale to reporters, Real were mostly caught up in allowing players to leave.

Kaka ended his frustrating spell in La Liga by returning to Milan, as Denis Cheryshev departed for Sevilla on a season-long loan and Antonio Adan was released on a free transfer.

Real Madrid also allowed Mesut Ozil to move to Arsenal, as the Premier League club broke their transfer record to secure his signature.

Transfer Wrap: Serie A

After a number of moves were thrashed out on a typically frantic transfer deadline day, we round up the biggest deals in Serie A.

Kaka was undoubtedly the headline arrival in the Italian top flight, as he ended a disappointing three-year spell in La Liga with Real Madrid in order to return to Milan.

"I'm coming home," he told Sky Italia after finalising his switch. 'I'm very happy and now I get to live lots of new joyous moments with Milan."

There was also a departure from the San Siro, with 18-year-old striker Andrea Petagna joining Sampdoria on a season-long loan with the option of co-ownership.

Sampdoria also acquired Birkir Bjarnason from Pescara on a permanent deal.

Hellas Verona enjoyed a successful end to the window, bringing in two highly rated loanees in the form of Juan Iturbe from Porto and Marco Donadel from Napoli.

Bologna and Catania were also busy in the loan market, signing Jonathan Cristaldo from Metalist Kharkiv and Jaroslav Plasil from Bordeaux respectively.

Meanwhile, young Inter midfielder Joel Obi will play his football for Parma this season, after agreeing a switch for the entirety of the 2013-14 campaign.

Juventus and Sassuolo were in negotiations for much of the day, as midfielder Luca Marrone joined the latter on a co-ownership deal while young striker Domenico Berardi joined the Serie A champions - though he will be loaned back immediately.

Serie A also saw a high-profile departure as goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano left Palermo to join Arsenal on loan for the season.

In other moves, Genoa captured Ricardo Centurion, Chievo Verona signed Tomasz Kupisz and Alessandro Bernardini and Livorno brought in Luca Anania.

Champions League - Qualification: PAOK Vs Schalke - Betting Tip

The first leg of this Champions League qualifier ended 1-1. Schalke had plenty of chances on 1-0 to cement their Champions League ticket but failed to convert. When you defend as sloppily as Schalke 04 has done so far this season a 1-0 lead is nothing. The Gelsenkirchen outfit learnt that the hard way as Miroslav Stoch scored the equalizer.

Schalke 04 has played one match since the first Champions League qualifier. A game they lost 2-1 away to Hannover. It was quite a game as Schalke had a man sent off within the first quarter of an hour, and one more towards the end. Hannover also saw a man sent off with 25 minutes still to go.

Schalke has no new injury worries to report, that means Huntelaar and Papadopoulos still are out.

PAOK lost 2-0 away to Panaitolikos domestically on Saturday. I’m sure they had Schalke on their mind. Midfielder Kostin Lazar sits out. Other than that the squad should be fit.

RUN OF PLAY

I expect Schalke to take the game to PAOK. After all the Greek have an away goal. They can afford to sit back and counter against a really shaky Schalke defense. Schalke will need Draxler, Farfan and Szalai to be at their very best.

PAOK V SCHALKE BETTING TIPS

Schalke is the better side of the two, but with all the issues they’ve had I don’t see them as material for any betting tips to be honest. They are underpriced too in the market as far as I can see. I can easily see PAOK score on the counter here, and if they do Schalke might very well implode as they have on several occasions already this season.

Champions League - Qualification: Basel Vs Ludogorets - Betting Tip

Ludogorets Razgrad is 2nd in Bulgaria after five matches played with 4-0-1. In their last match they racked up a good away win (1-0) to 4th Botev Plodiv. In Champions League qualification so far Ludogorets has knocked out decent opposition in Slovan Bratislava and Partizan Beograd. They have a couple of Bulgaria internationals at both senior and youth levels in the first eleven and looks quite a handful.

Basel played their way into the hearts of many underdog loving football fans in the 2011/2012 season when they participated in the group stages of the Champions League. They knocked out Maccabi Tel Aviv in the last round of qualification. Domestically they are 4th with 2-2-1 in their first five matches. That puts them 7 points behind Young Boys. Not a good start in other words. Basel does have quite a few internationals in the first eleven too so it’s a competitive Swiss side no doubt.

TEAM NEWS

Ludogorets will in this match be without three midfielders Dimo Bakalov, Mihail Aleksandrov, and Miroslav Ivanov. FC Basel will be without forward Marco Streller (their captain and top scorer), midfielder Geoffrey Serey Die, Fabian Ritter. Defender Taulant Xhaka is doubtful.

LUDOGORETS RAZGRAD – BASEL BETTING TIPS

Many will fall victim to their biases and consider Basel the big favorite here. I disagree! This looks quite evenly matched to me. One key indicator for that is the Bulgarian national team, built mainly on domestic talent these days. Ludogorets is top of the pops in Bulgaria, which has to count for something. Another key indicator is that Basel has been losing talent in a steady pace the last few years to bigger clubs. This window alone players such as Bobadilla, Dragovic, Joo-Ho, Steinhofer, Cabral and Zoua has left. Basel has been good at fostering talent, but it is a big ask to lose so many first teamers and expect things to remain hunky dory.

Premier League : Manchester United v Chelsea

Manchester United manager David Moyes will take charge of his first home Premier League fixture at Old Trafford against Chelsea on Monday.

Moyes saw his side post an excellent 4-1 win on the opening day of the season at Swansea City last weekend, with Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck scoring doubles for the Premier League champions.

But they are likely to face a sterner test against Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, who started their campaign with consecutive home wins against Hull City and Aston Villa.

Since being confirmed as Alex Ferguson's successor, Moyes has had to wait more than 100 days for his first competitive fixture in front of the club's supporters.

And although it is a match United will enter without a significant close-season signing – something they have been pursuing strongly – Moyes is still excited.

He said: "There have been a lot of things I have been looking forward to – like taking the team on tour and leading them out at Wembley.

"But to do it at Old Trafford for the first game against Chelsea is a thrill for me, it really is."

With both sides set to seriously challenge for the Premier League title, the fixture will have plenty riding on it, with neither camp willing to concede early ground to their rivals.

An intriguing sub-plot is the future of want-away Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney.

Rooney has submitted two transfer requests in the last three years and is a transfer target of Chelsea, who have had repeated bids turned down by United.

Mourinho claimed that Chelsea would not renew their interest until after the match had finished, in the interests of being professional and respectful.

Moyes has repeatedly said Rooney is not for sale and revealed that he may start against Mourinho's men.

"Wayne's got a good chance of playing. He has (a) good chance of starting (also)," Moyes said.

Brazilian defender Rafael (hamstring) is a certainty to miss, as is Darren Fletcher (illness) and Nick Powell (leg) for United.

Ashley Young (ankle), Nani (groin) and Javier Hernandez (hamstring) are unlikely to feature.

Chelsea could consider themselves fortunate to have defeated Villa 2-1 on Wednesday, with defender Branislav Ivanovic – who headed the winner with 17 minutes remaining – only given a yellow card after catching Christian Benteke with an elbow.

Chelsea have not lost in their last 10 Premier League fixtures, a run that included a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in May.

While Manchester United's home Premier League record is simply outstanding – they have won 51 of their last 59 home matches, losing just five – two of those defeats came against Chelsea.

The two sides played each other five times last term, with Chelsea knocking their rivals out of both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Mourinho’s only concern is David Luiz, who is a doubt to feature due to a hamstring injury.

Fernandez: Montpellier not afraid of PSG

Montpellier boss Jean Fernandez has insisted his team do not fear reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the new Ligue 1 season.

Montpellier were shock winners of the French top-flight title in 2011-12, but mustered a meek defence of their crown last season as they could only finish in ninth place.

However, ahead of his first season in charge at Stade de la Mosson, Fernandez has claimed his squad are not scared of going toe-to-toe with the big-spending Parisians.

"We are not afraid of PSG. They are certainly the best team in the league," he said.

"But as I said before, the league is already won for them. What they want is to win the Champions League. Leonardo said and I agree with him, they certainly have the best attack in the world.

"They can pair (Edinson) Cavani with (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic. They have Lucas on the right wing, and (Javier) Pastore or (Ezequiel) Lavezzi on the left. I am not sure we have the same huge offensive potential in any other club in Europe."

Fernandez did admit, however, that the French league is unlikely to see a repeat of Montpellier's shock victory.

"I think what Montpellier or Lens or Auxerre a few years ago were capable to do two years ago, would be much more difficult to do now," he added.

"Paris and Monaco have a bigger potential. But there are teams like Lyon, Lille or Marseille who can be competitive. But I can't see a mid-table team winning the league."

Marseille reach Khelifa agreement

Marseille are close to capturing Saber Khelifa after agreeing a fee with the striker's current club Evian.

The 26-year-old will now undergo a medical ahead of completing his switch to the Stade Velodrome.

Khlifa scored 13 goals and provided seven assists in 25 appearances in the French top flight last term to help Evian avoid relegation by two points.

He will now hope to contribute to Marseille's attempts to improve on their second-placed finish, as they look to overhaul champions Paris-Saint Germain.

Khelifa, who has been capped on 23 occasions by Tunisia, scored with an audacious effort from his own half during a win over Nice last term.

Marseille have also confirmed that Modou Sougou will move to Evian on a season-long loan as part of the deal.

Redknapp believes Remy loan deal is unlikely

QPR manager Harry Redknapp does not believe that striker Loic Remy will leave the club on loan, for Newcastle or anywhere else.

The Frenchman has been linked with a temporary move to St James' Park - a switch that would see him link up with a club he rejected in order to join Redknapp at Loftus Road in January.

However, Redknapp insists that a loan deal is not on the agenda, highlighting the Championship side's desire to recoup close to the £8million they paid Marseille for him midway through last season.

Remy has a release clause following QPR's relegation from the Premier League, and the former Tottenham boss - who bolstered his forward line with the signing of Charlie Austin on Thursday - is adamant that a fee must be paid if the 26-year-old is to leave the club.

"I don’t think he (Remy) will go on loan," he told The Independent.

"I can’t see any sense in it. I don’t know why we’d pay £8million and then loan him out.

"If he was to go, someone will have to pay for him. He has a buy-out clause, and we want our money back."

Isco pleased with Real start

Real Madrid new boy Isco believes that he is adapting well to life at the club, thanks to the help of his new team-mates.

The Spain Under-21 international moved to the Bernabeu from Malaga in June, and he is pleased with how the switch has panned out so far.

"My team-mates make it easy for me to adapt," he said after playing a part in Real's first two goals during their 3-1 pre-season win over LA Galaxy on Thursday.

"I try to play football and I am happy with how things are going so far.

"The team is finding its rhythm in matches and in the pre-season and also gaining confidence and good feelings.

"We are getting to know each other better for the start of the league season.

"There is still work to do, but we have just started."

The attacking midfielder has, though, stressed that there can be no let-up as Real continue their preparations ahead of the new campaign, which begins against Real Betis.

"We have to keep training to be ready," he added. "I am very happy about the match (against LA Galaxy) and the win and we have to keep going the way we are."

Guardiola happy with Bayern pre-season progress

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola was pleased with his side's 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the final of 2013 Audi Cup.

Goals from Thomas Mueller and substitute Mario Mandzukic were enough to see Bayern crowned winners of the pre-season tournament on Thursday after Alvaro Negredo had given City a second-half lead.

The match spelled the end of Bayern's pre-season campaign, with a DFB-Pokal clash against fourth-tier club BSV-Schwarz-Weiss Rehden looming next week.

"It's not easy to play against City with (Samir) Nasri, (Stevan) Jovetic and Negredo," Guardiola said.

"They all are incredible and if Dante and Javi (Martinez) were at full fitness it would have been a nice competition.

"Martinez has only trained five or six times with us, it's not a surprise that he is not 100 percent yet.

"But therefore the match was good, we gained more match experience, I'm happy about his performance."

The Bundesliga champions kick-off their title defence with a home fixture against Borussia Moenchengladbach at Allianz-Arena in just over a week.

And despite limited preparations for a number of key personnel, Guardiola is 'happy' with the state of his squad heading into the season opener.

"I'm happy about the way the players are behaving, they have all worked really hard so far," Guardiola said. "Bastian Schweinsteiger just came back after a few training sessions, Mario Goetze is joining us soon as well, Dante and Martinez had a short period of preparation.

"But the season is long and we have plenty of time to work on it."

Pellegrini: City on right track despite loss

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes his side will be better for their loss to Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup final.

Alvaro Negredo opened the scoring for City on Thursday before Thomas Mueller and Mario Mandzukic hit back to guide Bayern to victory in the pre-season tournament.

Despite the loss, Pellegrini was pleased with how his team had been tested by Bayern and argued it will serve City well in the upcoming English Premier League season.

"I think this was a very useful match to prepare," the former Malaga head coach said after the game.

"We played a very good match against a strong team that won the UEFA Champions League last season, in their stadium.

"I am really glad how my team played and at this moment we have another 15 days to prepare for the Premier League, I think that we are in the correct way."

City have bowed at the group stages of the UEFA Champions League in the last two seasons but Pellegrini is confident the Premier League club will reach the knockout stages this year, based on their performance against the reigning champions.

"I know we must improve in the Champions League but I am sure that if we play the group stages in the way we did today we will have a lot of chances to continue in the Champions League," Pellegrini said.

"That's why it was so important today, the way we played.

We didn't start with our best team today, we put in a mixture yesterday and today and all the players have had their chances and for me to know more about their performance.

"I think this is very important for the next Champions League, what we did today."

Thursday's outing was another chance for some of Pellegini's signings to prove themselves against quality opposition and the new manager was pleased with what he saw.

"Well I think that (Alvaro) Negredo, (Jesus) Navas, and (Stevan) Jovetic have just arrived to our squad," the 59-year-old said.

"They will improve every week they play with us but as I said I am happy with not only the way they played but the whole team."

Bony feeling good after Swansea debut

Wilfried Bony was a happy man as his two goals put Swansea in pole position in their UEFA Europa League tie with Malmo.

Swansea cruised to a 4-0 victory over their Swedish opponents at the Liberty Stadium on Thursday, giving them a good chance of making it into the play-offs of this year's competition.

Michael Laudrup's side took the lead early through Michu, but it was the Spaniard's link-up play with strike partner Bony that really impressed.

The Ivorian arrived at the Premier League side in July having scored 37 goals for Vitesse Arnhem in all competitions last season, and he was happy to make a scoring start for his new club.

"I feel good," he told ITV4. "It's very good for us, we can enjoy tonight and think about the next game.

"I am trying try to get to know Michu more and more because it is just my second game. It's important to concentrate in every training (session) and every game."

Fellow new signing Alejandro Pozuelo wrapped up the victory with a fourth goal four minutes from time to give Laudrup the ideal start to the new campaign.

"It's a perfect night," the Dane said. "Four goals, not conceding any away goals, two goals from the new man Bony, Michu is back scoring a goal, Pozuelo got a goal in his first game for the club, no injuries - it's perfect."

Higuain ready to fire Napoli to Serie A title

Vermaelen is expected to miss the next three months with his own back troubles, while Koscielny has injured his ankle.

"It opened my eyes in many ways," Miller told Sportal of the pressure at the club.

"If you're not winning silverware it's considered a failure.

"They are winning trophies year in year out and that's the mandate from the club.

"I don't expect too many changes. He'll (Moyes) put his stamp on one or two things he feels he might do differently but the history of the club and everything else – it will sort of run itself.

"With the players they have there, it should be a good time under the new manager."

The Rooney saga has dominated Moyes' first few weeks in charge, with Chelsea having a bid rejected for the England international despite the club insisting he's not for sale.

Asked about the Rooney situation, Miller said: "I'm old enough and wise enough to know don't believe everything you read.

"He's a massive player for United, a world-class player.

"I'm sure they will be doing everything in their power to keep him at the club because that's where his football is best for him.

"You don't want to weaken your hand and strengthen your neighbours (by selling him to Chelsea).

"I can't see any other place other than United for him but it will be down to the player and the club at the end of the day."

Miller made just 22 appearances for United during his time at the club as he struggled to break into their star-studded first team.

He eventually decided to leave the Red Devils in search of more games and while he admits it was a frustrating time in his career, he has no regrets about his time at the club.

"When i think back I enjoyed every minute of it," said Miller, who takes on his former club as part of the A-League All-Stars squad on Saturday night.

"It was frustrating not getting enough game time but training every day with the players that were there was something special and I'll always remember it.

"Playing with the likes of Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs as well. He's (Giggs) had an unbelievable career and is still having an unbelievable career at Man United.

"Playing with the players there I certainly learned a lot from them both on the pitch and playing in some of the matches I was involved in as well, I look back on it as a good thing."

Miller said he was excited to get the chance to play against his former club again but expects United to be smarting from their shock loss to another All-Stars XI in Bangkok last weekend.

"We're really looking forward to the game but we know it's not going to be easy," he said.

"You see United there in the Premier League every week and know the quality they have.

"Personally and I know the rest of the lads as well, we'll all be wanting to put on a good show and do as best as we can do."

Fiorentina have confirmed that they have agreed to sell Stevan Jovetic to Manchester City.

The Montenegrin attacker has been linked with a move away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi throughout the close-season following an excellent Serie A campaign last term.

Jovetic, 23, scored 13 goals in 34 appearances for Fiorentina in 2012-13.

He is set to become City's fourth signing of the transfer window, joining Fernandinho, Jesus Navas and Alvaro Negredo after Fiorentina revealed that they had reached an agreement with the Premier League club.

Roger Federer safely made it to the quarter-finals of the German Tennis Championships with a straight-sets victory over Jan Hajek.

The number one seed needed just one hour and 11 minutes to complete a 6-4 6-3 triumph at the ATP 500 clay-court event in Hamburg on Thursday.

Federer, who is looking for his fifth title at the tournament, broke the Czech qualifier twice in the first set, and despite losing a service game of his own, comfortably took the opener.

McQueen expects Rooney departure

Chelsea are thought to be ready to pay £10million and offload one of their current crop of players in order to bring the England international to London.

The 27-year-old was apparently less than impressed with new United manager David Moyes suggesting he would not be first choice next season.

Chelsea appear keen to take advantage of Rooney's fractious relationship with the champions' hierarchy, with the striker also having submitted a transfer request last season, and McQueen thinks he will eventually leave Old Trafford.

"Wayne Rooney is looking for a way out of Manchester United, and I think he will get one," McQueen told Sky Sports News.

Vilanova disappointed in Guardiola

Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova has denied Pep Guardiola's claims the Catalan club's chiefs used his illness against the former boss.

Guardiola, now in charge at Bayern Munich, claimed recently that powerbrokers at the La Liga champions used Vilanova's battle with cancer to 'damage' him.

But Vilanova has rebuffed Guardiola's argument, stating the club only had good intentions during his leave of absence to get treatment.

"I don't think anyone from the board of directors used my illness to attack him and both my family and I are very pleased with the club's attitude towards me," Vilanova said on Tuesday.

"They've made things easy for us, they've tried to help us as much as they can."

Guardiola was living in New York when Vilanova was there for treatment and the latter was saddened that his former boss did not make the effort to visit him.

"I've had this feeling with all the people who are working for the club, both staff and players, have cared about me," Vilanova said.

"My friends have cared about me. Some people have even taken a flight to visit me in New York.

"About Pep, I don't like to talk about personal issues but I only saw him during a two-day visit that I made.

"Later on, when I went into surgery and I was under treatment, we didn't see each other, and it wasn't my fault.

"He's my friend and I needed him then.

"Maybe he thought he didn't have to be at my side.

"He acted this way, I would have acted differently."

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell backed Vilanova's view of events.

"We were very surprised by his (Guardiola's) comments. What he said about the board of directors and about Tito is completely false," Rosell told 8TV.

Rooney United future in fresh doubt

Wayne Rooney's future at Manchester United remains clouded in uncertainty as he reportedly considers his position at the club.

The England striker has been the subject of intense speculation since the end of last season, after Manchester United's outgoing manager Alex Ferguson suggested that Rooney had handed in a transfer request following his omission from several key fixtures in the club's Premier League title-winning campaign.

Rooney subsequently denied those claims, while new manager David Moyes insisted in his opening press conference at Old Trafford that the former Everton forward was not for sale.

The club had hoped to draw a line under the matter following those public reassurances.

However, Rooney's future at United has been thrown into fresh doubt on Tuesday amid reports that he is 'angered and confused' about comments made by Moyes suggesting that he will no longer be a first choice at the club.

Moyes, speaking to the press on the club's pre-season tour in Bangkok last week, repeated his assurances that Rooney was not for sale, insisting that he had a 'major role to play'.

Mourinho: I convinced Lampard to stay

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's most important decision in his new tenure came before he was even appointed, the Portuguese boss has revealed.

Mourinho, who is beginning his second stint at Stamford Bridge having previously been in charge from 2004 to 2007, said he convinced veteran midfielder Frank Lampard to stay in the Premier League despite the Englishman's intentions to head elsewhere.

Lampard was out of favour at the club and was not offered a new contract by the club he has made over 400 appearances for since 2001.

But Mourinho, during his final season at Real Madrid, was in contact with Lampard, given their friendship from their time together at Chelsea.

And the two-time Champions League winning tactician told Lampard, 35, not to head to the MLS, as he had been touted to do.

"At that time (last season) I was not in contact with the club," Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"I was only in contact with him as a friend because we kept contact all over these years.

"I was telling him, 'the way I know you, don't go to American soccer. You are a player who needs to compete every week at the highest level, you are a player that needs to be in real competition'.

"If you go to the States, it's a fantastic country, football is coming up and you would be very important there but if you go there you will not enjoy your life and you have years to enjoy your life as a player.

"So my opinion was not to go but try and stay at Chelsea.

"'If Chelsea doesn't want you then try and stay in the Premier League because you belong to high level competition.'

"He was telling me in the Premier League he doesn't want to play in any other club."

Meade signs on at Swansea

Paris Saint-Germain have announced that technical director Leonardo has left the club with immediate effect.

The Brazilian had previously announced his departure from the Ligue 1 champions after being handed a lengthy ban for allegedly pushing a referee, but had decided to stay until the end of the transfer window.

However, during the unveiling of striker Edinson Cavani at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Leonardo had brought forward his exit date.

"Today was Leonardo's last day," club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said.

"I thank him for his work. He was a friend and I wish him all the best for the future. The punishment was too hard for him.

"People can leave, it doesn't change the project. I'm disappointed but I respect his decision."

Leonardo, who was responsible for bringing players such as Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to PSG, joined the club in 2011, and saw them win their first league title for 19 years in 2012-13.

However, the 43-year-old was due to serve a 13-month ban as of the beginning of next season for the altercation with the referee after a match against Valenciennes in May.

United´s targets never change, insists Moyes

David Moyes has insisted Manchester United's aims will always remain the same, regardless of who is in charge.

Moyes officially took over at United on July 1 after Alex Ferguson decided to call time on his 27-year spell at Old Trafford - a period that yielded a haul of 38 trophies.

And the former Everton manager has admitted that while taking over the reins from his fellow Scot is no easy task, he sees no reason to alter the club's targets.

"Our objectives for the season ahead are no different from what any Manchester United objectives would be - to win as many trophies as possible," he said ahead of his side's friendly against an A-League All Stars team in Sydney on Saturday.

"It's my first season as manager of Manchester United. I'm following probably the finest football manager that's ever lived. If I could even win a quarter of what he won I've done very well.

"The first thing I've got to do is settle in to the job, get to know everybody and find my own way around ... everyone at the club has been making that as easier as possible for me, the players especially have been terrific."

The 50-year-old went on to explain that he is expecting a difficult contest against Ange Postecoglou's inaugural A-League select XI, but added that his priority is making sure his squad are ready for the start of their Premier League title defence next month.

"(I'm) looking forward to the game," Moyes stated.

"Big game, big crowd - it should be a good night.

"I'm sure the Aussie players will be a bit more in free flow than we are. I think when you play Manchester United everybody wants to beat them.

While the 46-year-old was pleased with their friendly victory, he feels Dortmund need to be more creative in their play as the new season approaches.

"We have tried to play little chip balls behind the defensive line a bit too often," he added.

"But when you are faced with such a tempo I'd say that's normal, we should certainly be trying to vary more.

"(But) why should one criticise it all? It was already very good and it showed us the potential we have for the future to improve."

Bayern agree Thiago deal

Bayern Munich have agreed a deal to bring Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara to the club.

Thiago, who had been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, will move to the Allianz Arena on a four-year deal, subject to a medical, for a fee of €25million euros.

Bayern will only receive €20million of that fee, with the remaining €5million to be made up by revenue generated from a friendly between the two teams and the fact Thiago has waived personal salary payments.

The 22-year-old will link up with former manager Pep Guardiola in Munich after he took the reins from treble-winning boss Jupp Heynckes in June.

Spain international Thiago becomes the third signing of the Guardiola era following the captures of Mario Goetze and Jan Kirchoff.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was quick to express his delight at sealing the deal.

"Thiago Alcantara was the great desire of our new coach Pep Guardiola," Rummenigge told the club's official website.

"We are delighted that we pulled off this big transfer. Thiago has only just been selected as the best player of the UEFA U21 European Championship. He is a fantastic player with great perspective, which will strengthen Bayern."

Shelvey eyes England spot

Swansea midfielder Jonjo Shelvey wants to become the first player from the club to earn an England call-up.

Shelvey, 21, moved to the Welsh club from Liverpool for £6million on July 3, signing a four-year deal and ending a frustrating spell with the Anfield club.

The one-time England international believes moving to Swansea does his chances of a call up from Roy Hodgson no harm.

"If I play every week, I feel I can get in the England squad," Shelvey said.

I'm sure Roy Hodgson's not bothered who you play for. Look at Ryan Shawcross at Stoke.

"They're not a massive club so I don't think it will affect me coming here.

"It’d be part of Swansea history as they've never had a current England international before."

Shelvey made nine starts for Liverpool in the English Premier League last season and came off the bench 10 times.

But he was unlikely to break into Brendan Rodgers' first team any time soon and said the move to Swansea was all about getting more playing time.

"I've been frustrated for three years and it was time to try and make a name for myself," Shelvey said.

Moyes: Rooney not for sale

Manchester United manager David Moyes has reiterated his stance that star striker Wayne Rooney is not for sale.

As he prepared for his first match in charge of United - a friendly against a Singha All-Star XI in Bangkok - Moyes was adamant that Rooney would stay at Old Trafford, despite rampant speculation about the 27-year-old's future.

"Unless I was speaking double Dutch last week, we said Wayne is not for sale," Moyes said.

"It's hard to keep repeating myself but I will - Wayne is a United player and it will remain that way."

Moyes said his excitement levels were building ahead of his first hit-out in the United hot seat, and said he has been impressed by the professionalism of the squad's senior members.

"I'm really excited about this challenge and this stage of my career," Moyes said. "But I'm more excited about the players I'm working with. That's the really great thing.

"They'd lift any coach and they've certainly lifted me because I see the ability and I have seen their professionalism, which is second to none. And their commitment to be winners is there every day too.

"I wouldn't say I'm surprised, but I am really pleased to see how committed they are."

Moyes said the team had been buoyed by the support they had received in Thailand, and is eager to begin his era as United boss.

"When I got the job I was very much aware of the tour of Asia and that my first game would be in Thailand," he said.

"I didn't think an awful lot about it at the time, but I'm really excited about it now.

"I know the stadium has been sold out, you see the amount of Manchester United supporters in Thailand and I'm looking forward to being here and, hopefully, it's just the first of many games to come as Manchester United manager."

Niang targets prolific season

AC Milan youngster M'Baye Niang is hoping to follow in the goal-scoring footsteps of team-mate Stephan El Shaarawy next term.

The 18-year-old attacker managed just one goal last season for the Serie A side, in the Italian Cup against Reggina, and has been criticised in some quarters for his finishing.

And Niang said he is hopeful of adding to his tally next term, and is looking to emulate his prolific team-mate El Shaarawy, who scored 16 Serie A goals last season - equal third on the league's scoring charts.

"I hope I'll follow Stephan El Shaarawy's example next season with great performances for Milan and a lot of goals," the Frenchman said.

"Last season I had the chance to grow, I played a lot since my arrival in Milan and I hope I can continue playing a lot and score a lot too.

"I had the feeling my performances had dropped at the end of the season, maybe due to a bit of tiredness. I'm working and preparing to play a whole season."

Niang said he is constantly learning at San Siro, and wants to add more physicality to his game - in the mould of AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli.

"I learnt a lot last season thanks to my team-mates who are great players and thanks to the coach," he said.

"Balotelli is a great champion. It's a great pleasure for me to play with him and I have to work a lot to become stronger than him."

And Niang said Milan will be going all out to end Juventus' recent dominance of Italian football, with the men from Turin bidding for a third successive Serie A title.

"Juventus is a great team, but we have good qualities too and we can be competitive," he said.

"Let's hope the Scudetto will be ours this season."

Wenger aims to take advantage of stability

Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal's stability can help them break an eight-year trophy drought this season.

With Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all entering the 2013/14 campaign under new management, Wenger is the only boss from the English Premier League's top four clubs last season to retain his position for the coming campaign.

Wenger, speaking from Indonesia where Arsenal are about to begin a pre-season tour of Asia, believes that could give his team the jump on their rivals this season.

"Nobody knows what effect the changes will have but we hope to take advantage of our greater stability," Wenger said.

"What has been frustrating for me is that in recent years we couldn't give our fans what they expected of us.

At 63 and entering the final year of his contract with the Gunners, Wenger says he has no intention of following Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson into retirement, insisting he wants to stay at the Emirates Stadium club beyond next season.

"I am committed to staying longer at this club and we have already had a chat with Ivan (Gazidis, Arsenal chief executive)," he said.

"The talks went well and it's not a problem. But I will not use my longevity as an advantage to stay in this position if I don't do well.

"My future will depend on how well I do. I don't just assume I will always be here.

"I've always shown my loyalty to this club and I don't need to prove anything on that. But I want to do well for Arsenal so this is an important season for me."

Wenger said he had resisted overtures from Paris Saint-Germain to remain at the north London club.

"People are always linking me with PSG because I am French and I know the owners," he said.

"But if I wanted to go to PSG I would be there already. I'm not because my heart is with Arsenal and they are always my priority."
